Quora BNBR – How much do you have to lose?

In this new article, we will be talking about the Quora BNBR policy and adding to our Quora Cluster for what is probably the very last time.

Let’s get started!

Quora BNBR - How much do you have to lose?

UPDATE 7/12/2020

I am already getting comments from the trolls on this article basically saying that I got what I deserved.

It is ironic that these people are accusing me of everything they are doing themselves.

But I know i have karma on my side.

Quora BNBR – How much do you have to lose?

So here we go for what is probably our last post on the awesome question and answer site Quora.

Now, this is not a post that is set out to trash what I consider to be the very best question site on the web this is more a social therapy post designed to help me accept what has happened and maybe help a few Quora members who stumble upon this content and read.

So if Quora is such a great site why am I no longer posting about them?

Well let’s put it this way, it is very difficult to stay positive about a site that bans you and very difficult to write about new features and tips when you can’t actually use the site.

Yes Quora has banned my account, apparently because of multiple breaches of the BNBR policy (Be Nice Be Respectful Policy)

And to be honest I am not even sure how I am supposed to have broken the Quora BNBR policy but it does look like this is something that Quora does not forgive.

In this new article we are talking about Quora's BNBR policy - Quora BNBR - How much do you have to lose?Click To Tweet

The BNBR policy

A core Quora principle, “Be Nice, Be Respectful” (or “BNBR”), requires that people treat other people on the site with civility, respect, and consideration.

Respect opposing or differing opinions, beliefs and conclusions.

Try to listen to and understand others you may disagree with.

Encourage others on the site to also be welcoming and respectful.

No hate speech

No glorifying or advocating violence

Harassment or bullying is not allowed

This is a policy that I do not think that I have broken but at the same time, I have not been very smart in acknowledging the dangers and balancing them against what I had to lose.

So why am I banned from Quora?

When you ask questions on Quora it is very frustrating that members can just merge them with other questions or just edit them at will.

There are a growing number of trolls on Quora who just hate Partner Program members and act as vigilantes.

Recently a member started to merge my questions, I am not going to mention any names or provide evidence I am just going to give my account of what happened.

It started with 3 or so questions. Member X merged them and I reverted the changes.

They merged them again and I unmerged them again.

Then they started to take an interest in other questions and 3 merges became 6 merges became 9 merges to the extent that all they did for 3 days solid was to merge my questions.

They left comments giving the reason for the merges and quoted that I needed to refer to Quora’s policies.

My first mistake was acting on these merges and commenting that the member was taking a very unhealthy interest in my questions that there continued merging was a breach of the BNBR policy and nothing more than harassment. I also commented that I had reported their actions.

A very unhealthy interest in my questions

Member X was not a young member, they liked arts and crafts topics, they didn’t have any interest in the topics my questions were based around.

Suddenly a member who was not interested or informed about my questions was actively attacking my questions in a whole range of topics spreading far and wide.

In my opinion, this was nothing more than vigilante vandalism.

I sent in support tickets for the 3 days these exchanges were happening informing them of what was happening.

I was actively looking for help of which none came.

Unfortunately, I got caught up in the annoyance of what was happening and made the mistake of just not walking away.

Then on Friday the 4th December, I received an email saying that I had been banned for breaching Quora’s BNBR policy.

How did Quora come to this judgement?

I don’t know is the answer.

I don’t really know how what I did was any different from Member X but for some reason, sides were taken and it was my account that paid the price.

Quora Partner Program members have targets on their backs.

And the trolls and vigilantes actively seek them out.

So the question is can you engage and stand up for yourself or do you let them run riot?

It all depends on how much you have to lose, and Partner Program members have a lot to lose.

The vigilantes and trolls, on the other hand, have very little to lose.

So my conclusion is that the Quora BNBR policy creates a very uneven playing field for members.

Quora BNBR Beware – Takeaways

Despite being banned from Quora I still consider it to be the best Q&A site on the web, with it running rings around the likes of Reddit and Yahoo Answers.

I do think that Quora moderation has made a huge mistake, what exactly did I do to warrant this treatment?

Very little in my opinion and considering that I emailed support daily to report Members X’s vandalism I do feel that moderation could have reached out to me and diffused any dispute.

It is also unfair that one of the most active members on Quora is singled out and Member X walks away with a smile on their face.

I do have an appeal outstanding to be reinstated my account but have already been told via my initial contact regarding the vandalism that my ban will not be reversed.

Perhaps a Christmas miracle will happen and a different member of the support team will feel that this is all a bit onesided and reactivate my account.

Only time will tell.

To all the members

To all the members who answered my questions, shared them and upvoted them, a big thank you and to those in my communities of which there were thousands and thousands I am sorry that I’m not there to engage with all the great content you created and continue to create.

I have been with Quora for years and years and was extremely active but it has been killed for me and I am left feeling angry at myself and really disappointed with how Quora handled this.

Member X was not the only member who targetted my account, there were plenty of others along with the odd member who pretended to be a vigilante to hide in amongst them allowing them to post all but identical questions while being able to stay under the radar.

That is all I have to say on this other than to wish Quora every success moving forward.

Regards Dexter

Quora is one of the best resources online. Unfortunately, every platform has its rules and regulations and its up to individual users to get use to it. I think however that Quora should try find a way to make the platform more user friendly

I agree it is just a shame that they have this stupid BNBR rule and then don’t listen to you when you contact them. Too many trolls on their who act in groups, there is also the odd scammer who post monetized questions then spam them to every space possible and get away with it.
