Social Media SEO – Why Social Media Matters To Your Website

posted in: SEO, Social Media | 6

Social Media And SEO Are A Perfect Match

Social Media SEO is the new form of search engine optimization that has come about in recent years. Before social media came along search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo had to rely on many different algorithms to determine how to rank a website.  They determined things like link quality, content uniqueness, on and off page SEO which worked well. But people learned how to fluff the system and rank bad quality content. Social media sites like Facebook and Google Plus changed this by giving search engines something else to rank with. The more content is shared on social media websites the more it’s likely to rank in Google.

Social Media SEO Is All About Authority And Branding

5+ years ago social media wasn’t as important as it is today. Today social media is an authority marker. SEO relies heavily on various authoritative signals to increase a website’s ranking. Today a lot of a website’s authority comes from many social media signals (as well as many others). The social signals are used to help determine a websites worthiness to rank for related keywords. Many SEO experts will debate just how much authority you do actually get from social media websites. Imagine a bunch of Social SEO Arrows pointing at your site. Below I will give you 5 good reasons why social media websites build authority, branding, and traffic to increase a website’s ranking.

5 Reasons Why Social Media And SEO Go Hand In Hand

1. Why Social Websites Affect Your SEO

Social indicators to a profile’s authority have been out for some time. Do search engines consider links published on social accounts to be good backlinks? When blog posts go viral on Facebook, do the new links boost the post’s search engine ranking?

Many search engine marketers believe that links to your website from social media accounts do actually impact on your rankings. Links are achieved through developing original content that is shared across social media sites. Links to your content on Facebook, Pinterest, Reddit, LinkedIn, Google Plus, YouTube and other social networks help search engines understand what websites have authority and should be ranked for what keyword phrases. Things like how often a link is tweeted. How often shared, as well as the authority of the sharer, are all factors. Social media pages get treated like any other pages in the web index. If something occurs on any of them and it can be crawled it will end up in search results. I believe the authority of a social account does impact search rank, links published on social media sites are marked as authority back-links and influence page rank.

2. Social Media Profiles Rank in Search Engines

Social sharing affects a web page’s position in search rankings and so do social profiles. Profiles quite often rank in the top results in search listings for brand names. An active social media profile linking to your website gives it great authority as well as website traffic. It’s my personal opinion that social website profiles matter to Google and especially to people who are looking for you online. A few active social channels can make the experience of getting to know your brand online more fun, engaging and personal. While some may consider Google Plus not essential, businesses shouldn’t discount the fact that their Google+ profile is likely one of the first things searchers will see. So it pays to have a profile with current information and engaging content.

3. Social Media Increases Your Branding

One major reason a business should use social media is to reach out to a specific audience. By reaching out to targeted audiences through engaging content and increasing brand awareness, you gain authority. Make everything you post on social media is in line with your business niche, post related but engaging content. Be aware of the “tone” you use when engaging in conversations on social media. Responding and engaging people way will always further your image, and it takes little time to do.

4. Social Media Increases Your Website Traffic

Using social media to drive targeted visitors to your site actually helps your SEO. A little-known reason Google decides to rank a page or site is how much traffic it gets. If a website is getting traffic from social media it must have good or valuable content. So building and engaging social media traffic, you are actually helping your site to rank! Social media really does matter for SEO. These days, they work together. You can’t have one without the other! By ignoring the social media side of your SEO regime, you’re not creating a good SEO campaign.

5. Social Media Provides Collaboration And Networking

Social media allows you to network with other businesses and individuals. By and using social media sites as they are intended you will gain the possibility of getting links, on other established websites increasing both your SEO and authority. It will be networking with others that will truly be one of your biggest returns from social media.

So to recap. We get authority and links from social media. An active social media account will rank better in search engines providing more authority. Social media increases your branding and authority. And finally, social media sites provide an opportunity to meet other people. SEO is all about authority these days, the more you have of it the more likely you will rank!

Social Media SEO Isn’t That Hard

Doing your own social media SEO work isn’t that difficult, however, it can be a lot of work. First, you need to get started by developing a good presence in at least 5+ of the main social media websites. Next, you need to add those social media sites into your website to make it easier for visitors to share. Once you have done that part your pretty much set. Building your social media network can be difficult and where the most work is needed these days.

How To Do Your Own Social Media SEO

Doing your own social media SEO work is something you can do on your own. If you use a CMS like WordPress the job of sharing your content on social media sites is made easier. Simply by adding a few plugins, your website can share each post for you.

Your visitors will also be able to share your content which is most important. There are 2 WordPress plugins I highly recommend and they are JetPack and The Ultimate Social Plugin. Simply search them up in the WordPress plugin library. These plugins will both post to social media accounts directly and allow the sharing of your content to them as well.

  1. JetPack is easily installed via the back-end of your WordPress site. Once installed it will offer you the option to add your various media accounts. JetPack will both post your content to your social site profiles and offer sharing buttons on pages and posts.

  2. The Ultimate Social Plugin offers a nice sliding option of sharing icons on the side of your site. It’s just as easily installed and setup as JetPack. It’s quite user-friendly boasts a wide range of features that are attention-grabbing.

Once you have installed those plugins you will be posting directly to your social media accounts. If you need some social media tips then try these, they will help you learn how to get the most from your social media. Now ensure you heed the first 5 points I listed earlier and you are off to a good start.

There is a lot in here in which I agree. Social signals from social media sites are considered important ranking factors, though, their relevance often changes throughout time. I still don’t think Social Media SEO — for specifically social searches on sites, like, Facebook and Twitter gets enough attention. Sometimes, social signals for SERPs (for ranking a page in Google, etc) are a nice-to-have rather than the main goal — as ranking in social searches in-and-of themselves can provide tremendous benefits.

For example, I have an affiliate SEO client who wouldn’t dare attempt to rank in the Google SERPs, though, does very well being on the top of social search SERPs (in Twitter, Instagram, etc). Social fortresses, though, are certainly important for attempting to go the other route, with the aim to leverage social media sites to rank a website in the main search engines.

I agree with Dexter – HipCraft raises a valid point. Social media search platforms provide an alternative way of ranking when given enough authority. I’ll be sure to add this point in a followup article. The evidence that this is an effective SEO method is that after only 2 – 3 days an article published by Dexter is already ranking in my local search (multiple unlinked browsers and devices to be sure) for terms like “SEO traffic generation guide” & “traffic generation guide 2017” and likely a few other terms. You’ll find a link to Dexters article in my commentluv below – Thanks for the thoughtful comment!

Further evidence of the effectiveness that social media gives to your SEO campaign is the fact that after only 6 hours after publishing this article it now ranks in Google for “Why Social Media Matters To Your Website” – obviously there are other factors at play here like on page seo but this kind of fast ranking for long tail keyword phrases wouldn’t be possible without social media!

Social media is also a huge part of my strategy to index new articles within the hour. We can now pretty much index within 10 minutes now with the help of social signals and fetch as Google.
